City Rooms:

Palermo Orrery

Palermo Orrery

The Genius of Palermo or Genius Loci is one of the oldest symbols as well as lay patron of the Sicilian city. It is situated in eight different locations within Palermo; It is a performing fragment within the city, that ties centuries of history and culture, while remaining a contemporary emblem for the city. I surveyed the Genius Loci through three scales: the scale of the body, the scale of the city and the scale of the landscape.

Made from marble the sculpture of the patron God is tied to the quarries of Palermo as well as to other ‘marble locations’ found within the city. One of them, Palazzo Constantino, shares the same marble properties of the Genius Loci, eventually becoming a vessel for designing the Sculptor’s Workshop: a single ‘drawing room’ for the sculptor that created the Genius Loci. The Palermo Orrery acts as a methodology and reorganises the eight Geniuses, suggesting a new taxonomy for the Sculptor’s Workshop.
